New to Therapy?
Taking the First Step
Starting therapy can feel like a big step.
You may be feeling nervous, uncertain, hopeful, overwhelmed, or simply curious about whether therapy could help. Many people wonder what to expect, what they should talk about, or whether their concerns are "serious enough" to bring to therapy.
If you're asking these questions, you're not alone.
Therapy is not only for times of crisis. It can also be a space for self-discovery, healing, personal growth, and learning new ways to navigate life's challenges. You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out.
At Violet Light Counseling, therapy is viewed as a collaborative process—a supportive space where you can slow down, reflect, gain insight, and work toward meaningful change at a pace that feels right for you.
What Can I Talk About in Therapy?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, explore your concerns and goals, and talk about what you hope to gain from the process.
There is no pressure to share everything at once, and there is no "right" way to do therapy. Together, we will work to create a space that feels supportive, respectful, and tailored to your unique needs.
What Happens Between Sessions?
Therapy does not begin and end with the session itself.
Many clients find that insights, emotions, and new perspectives continue to emerge throughout the week. You may notice patterns more clearly, reflect on topics discussed in therapy, or become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and reactions in everyday life.
Between sessions, some clients choose to journal, practice coping skills, reflect on goals, or simply observe their experiences with greater curiosity and awareness. Others find that meaningful shifts occur naturally as they begin viewing themselves and their challenges through a different lens.
There is no expectation to complete homework or do therapy perfectly between sessions. Growth often happens through small moments of awareness, reflection, and intentional change over time.
Common Questions
How do I know if therapy could help me?
Many people assume they need to be in crisis before seeking support. In reality, therapy can be helpful for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, stress, relationship challenges, grief, life transitions, self-esteem, personal growth, and gaining a deeper understanding of yourself.
If something in your life feels difficult, overwhelming, or keeps showing up despite your efforts to manage it on your own, therapy may provide valuable support and perspective.
What if I've never been to therapy before?
Many clients begin therapy without knowing exactly what to expect. Feeling nervous, uncertain, or even skeptical is completely normal. The first session is simply an opportunity to talk about what brings you to therapy, ask questions, and explore whether working together feels like a good fit.
What if I don't know what to say?
That's okay. Many people start therapy with only a general sense that something isn't working or that they would like support. You do not need to arrive with a clear plan or perfect understanding of your concerns. Part of the therapeutic process is helping you gain clarity and better understand your experiences.
Will I have to talk about painful experiences right away?
No. Therapy moves at a pace that feels comfortable and appropriate for you. Building trust and safety is an important part of the process. There is never pressure to discuss anything before you feel ready.
What if I'm feeling nervous about starting therapy?
Feeling nervous, uncertain, or intimidated about starting therapy is completely normal. Beginning something new—especially when it involves discussing personal experiences, emotions, or challenges—can feel vulnerable.
You do not need to have everything figured out before your first session. Therapy is a process, and we will move at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Many people find that their anxiety begins to lessen once they realize there is no pressure to be perfect and no expectation to share more than they are ready to share.
